Roger began his 2021 grass court season today at the Noventi Open in Halle, Germany. He faced Ilya Ivashka in the first round and got a win under his belt to gain some confidence beating the 90th ranked player 7-6 (4_, 7-5.
“Overall I think I served very well. Clearly, I can always be a little bit better, but I’m very happy and excited that I was able to get through the first one. I’m excited to be back on the green grass. And getting a win is obviously always very nice.”
Next he will face Felix Auger-Aliassime or Hubert Hurkacz. Roger has advanced to at least the quarterfinals in his previous 17 appearances in Halle.

Roger secured his spot in the second week at Roland Garros defeating 59th, ranked Dominik Koepfer, in a long, four set battle 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4), 7-5.
The next day, he decided rest was in order after the grueling 3rd round victory.
"After two knee surgeries and over a year of rehabilitation it's important that I listen to my body and make sure I don't push myself too quickly on my road to recovery," Roger said in a statement released by the French tennis federation. "I am thrilled to have gotten 3 matches under my belt. There is no greater feeling than being back on court."
June 3, 2021 -- Paris, France
In his second round, Roger had a bit of a battle against the big hitting and former World No. 3, Marin Cilic. The Swiss Star got off to a strong start and even battled a time violation called by the umpire in the second set. A little rattled, he quickly regained composure and won the match in 4 sets 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2. Hatting 47 winners to take out the former US Open Champion, this victory advances Roger to the third round at Roland Garros, his first major tournament in 16 months.
“Overall I’m very happy how I’m feeling and also confident that tomorrow I’ll feel fine somehow.”
Next up, the 39-year old will face the German lefty, Dominik Koepfer. The two have never played.
“The first round I didn’t surprise myself per se, but now in the second round, I did,” Roger said. “Now can I keep it up and how will the body react? We’ll see. The mind is getting stronger, I can feel it. I have more clarity, I have more confidence growing in me.”

20-time Grand Slam Champion, Roger Federer, took to the courts at Roland Garros to begin his 2021 French Open campaign.
Roger returned to Grand Slam competition for the first time since the 2020 Australian Open. He looked to be in good form as he took on the Qualifier from Uzbekistan, Denis Istomin, in the first round. Swinging freely, Roger looked comfortable dictating points on the clay and won the match in just 93 minutes, 6-2, 6-4, 6-3.
“I just felt overall much clearer, much better,” he said. “I think getting used to tournament and match rhythm again, the whole thing with the towels there, the shot clock there, everything that goes with it.”
Roger will face Marin Cilic in the second round.
“I feel really hopeful. As I say, you could see it today in the match, I’m feeling that here, at least this year with this weather, with these balls, I can play like on hard courts. It doesn’t feel different than Australian Open for me coming into this tournament. Now when I’m coming to these big tournaments feeling like this, I know I’m capable of doing big things.”
